What Kind of Billboard are You?

Lecrae – “Tell The World”

(lyrics provided at the bottom of post)

We are all “Billboards” for something. My question to you is what does your Billboard shout?

Recently I went and spoke at Grace Baptist Church’s MOPS group. I spoke on embracing your past and becoming the beautiful mess that God is calling you to be. I concentrated on three main points – 1. Being firm in your faith and recognizing you are a vessel for God; 2. Forgiveness – not just of others but of yourself for your past and current sins; and finally 3. Judgement – not just to withdrawal from judging others but of not being afraid of the judgement of others. Why did I choose to speak on this? Well, not only is it a message that speaks to my own heart, but from what I have come to hear from others, it is a message that is seldom heard, but desperately needed. Why? Because far too many people are being pushed down or away at the hands of other Christians.

When I ask about who/what you are a billboard for – I would suppose most of you would say “Christ/God of course”, but when you think about this I want you to examine what does that entail? Given the state of our society today and what social media and technology bring us, who you are encompasses so many facets. We have our lives on literal display, but what are we displaying? More and more people are falling away from God at the hands of other Christians than ever before.  Our Christianity, now a days, has become more about individual convictions instead of heart relationships. This in turn has caused people to believe they are not true in their faith or worthy of God’s forgiveness due temporal, outward or even past things instead of one’s present heart for the Lord.

Brothers and Sisters, our lives should be a billboard for the Lord in far more than what we say or do. You can walk the supposed walk and talk all the talk but a heart for Christ that does not make. If your heart is truly for the Lord then the Love of Christ will fill you and His walk will become the direction you want to take. If you examine the scripture Christ’s walk was full of pain and torment; full of walking with the darkness to show the light; walking with those who were downtrodden and without hope. He came to SEEK AND SAVE THE LOST. Too much today we turn away from embracing those with tumultuous pasts or current battles over sin. We need to come alongside and be a light – a billboard of hope for them. If we are walking a life according to Christ then our life will not only convict those in sin but even more so give them hope of knowing there is a way out.

I know all too well the feelings of those eyes of judgmental people – and what they portray. Many people ask me if it scares me to share my testimony and the answer is YES!  But then I have to ask myself why do I feel scared to share? It is an amazing account of the grace, power, mercy and undeniable love of Christ!!! We should feel free to shout it out! To use our testimony to be a billboard for the names of God: Redeemer, Justifier, Sanctifier, Lover of our Soul! Yet, instead we hide away because of the judgments of others. Satan is happy about this one! Rev. 12:11 says our testimony can help to defeat the evil one so if we are not sharing it, then he is all too glad about it.

Suicide rates are alarmingly increasing as our lives are more on display and more accessible to others as ever, people are feeling worthless and useless. They are replacing the fear and acceptance of God with the fear and acceptance of man.  Yet, it is God who has the power to send us to Heaven or Hell. So, if GOD is for us who then can be against us? Who? If the Lord, who is to be revered, feared, adored & loved is for us – the Lord who made ALL, sustains ALL and has ALL in HIS hands, then what else is there to be feared? Believe me, I get it when we fear people. I am they shyest of people due to my fear of man, but God is working on me – not letting the thoughts and feelings of others uphold me or destroy me. It is hard when we are surrounded by things that make us feel less than who we want to be. But instead of letting the thoughts, actions and feelings of others direct us, we need to look to God’s Word to direct us. What does God want for our lives? Let us put on the billboard of Christ and what He has done and continues to do in our lives. Let us carry ourselves with humility, love, forgiveness & most importantly the light of God. We need to be a correct billboard – one who represents God correctly.

I love TELL THE WORLD by Lecrae  (video above; lyrics below); The Lyrics really speak to my heart’s desire! I want to shout AMEN through the whole thing! You know what I love about Lecrae – He is man who is SHOUTING he is a sinner and has been saved out of a terrible terrible past. He shouts GOD’s redemption, but he also shouts God’s Words of conviction.  Lecrae doesn’t sugar coat God’s Word and he let’s God do the convicting. He says he struggles like everyone else, but our hearts and minds should be set on God and sharing Him with others. Boy does he get ridiculed and mocked, but he stays the course of SHOUTING God and Christ because he is doing it for GOD – he is living his life like Apostle Paul – a life in thankfulness and love TO GOD who has saved him – not a life for others or himself. He wants to see people come to Christ, not fall away.

In The Warring Soul I tried to tell the gospel in a way that shows conviction but hope and love. I tried to show the thoughts and the hearts of those who are caught in something terrible and how hard it is to come out of it because of other people. Accepting God is one part of the puzzle. There are many who want to turn from their ways, but because of people they don’t. Because of the thoughts, actions, minds of others they are afraid to even ask how to turn to God.

It’s a very hard-line isn’t it? We want to be loving billboards of God and Christ, but we are also called to live a life worthy of the calling! There is the billboard of conviction and the billboard of love. We can’t just be “Come to Christ He loves you”, we have to preach – FEAR God – Follow God – LOVE God. We can’t fill people’s lives with pretty butterflies all the time, we have to show the life that God is calling us to live as a thank you letter to HIM. But we need to watch what kind of conviction we are giving. Is it correct? What is your motivation for what you are doing/saying in your life –  is it out of love and thankfulness to God or for acceptance of others? Or, if it is a motive of conviction then is it proper conviction – something that is worthy of conviction? And is it loving? We have to make sure we are not a hinderance to those who God is calling! Be a billboard of the Light, the Love and the Life that GOD is!

We won’t ever get it perfect. But my purpose is to come alongside and say “Hey, I sin too, but I have a God that is not only saving me, but showing me the way.” There is HOPE in Christ…let’s be a billboard for that!

Now, I’mma tell the world, tell ‘em
I’mma tell it everywhere I go
Tell the world, tell ‘em
Yeah, I’m a billboard
Tell the world, tell ‘em
And I’m broadcastin’ like a radio
Tell the world
You ought to know, I’m brand new

[Verse 1 (Lecrae):]
I know one thing’s true: I don’t even really deserve to know you
But, I-I’m a witness that you did this, and I’m brand new
So, I-I’m read’ to go, and I’mma tell the world what they need to know
A slave to myself, but you let me go, I tried getting high but it left me low
You did what they could never do
You cleaned up my soul and
Gave me new life – I’m so brand new
And that’s all that matters
I-I ain’t love you first, but you first loved me
In my heart I cursed you, but you set me free
I gave you no reason to give me new seasons, to give new life, new breathing
But you hung there bleedin’, and ya’ died for my lies and my cheatin’, my lust and my greed, (and Lord!)
What is a man that you mindful of him?
And what do I have to deserve this lovin’?

[Hook (Mali Music):]
Tryna make the moments last
Holdin’ on to the past
But, like a hero in a dream
Christ came, and he rescued me

Now, I’mma tell the world,
Tell the world, tell ‘em
I’mma tell it everywhere I go
Tell the world, tell ‘em
Yeah, I’m a billboard
Tell the world, tell ‘em
And I’m broadcastin’ like a radio
Tell the world
You ought to know, I’m brand new

[Verse 2 (Lecrae):]
I can’t offer you nothin’, but your care & kindness keeps comin’
And your love is so unconditional, I get butterflies in my stomach
I got the old me in the rearview, now the new me got a clear view
And I was so dead, I couldn’t hear you, too deep in sin to come near you
But you drew me in, you cleaned me up, so take me home, beam me up
Before you do, just let me tell the truth, and let these folks know that I done seen ya’ love
And it’s everlasting, infinite, it goes on and on, you can’t measure it
Can’t quench ya’ love, they can’t separate us from the love of God, there’s no estimate
My face look the same, my frame ain’t rearranged, but I’m changed; I promise I ain’t the same
Your love’s so deep you suffered and took pain, you died on the cross to give me a new name
Ain’t nothing like I’ve seen before, I got a beaming glow
I was low, down, and dirty, but you cleaned me, Lord
You adopted me, you keep rocking me
I’mma tell the world, and ain’t nobody stopping me!
