6:00 a.m. the alarm shrieks in my ear and I reluctantly roll out of bed. Even though my racing mind about upcoming doctor visits and surgeries, life decisions and recent car accidents had me stirring an hour earlier I still find myself stumbling across the room to grab my bathrobe. I shuffle down the stairs and turn the coffee pot on. I plop myself down at the kitchen table and grab my phone to check my emails while I wait for the anticipated caffeine to perk me up. I weed through the junk emails where I am introduced to the so-called sales of the day. Bored, and getting slightly impatient at my coffee maker for taking so long to prime, I click on my news app to check out the daily murders in Syria, the President’s latest antics, the teenager killed overnight or the latest Ebola scare. Realizing, I am not awake enough to handle the news, I flip open my Facebook app am instantly overwhelmed by all the articles about foods to eat/not to eat, medicines that are bad for you or things to take/not to take. Finally, after seeing why you shouldn’t drink caffeine and looking over at my Keurig now blinking “ready” I shut my phone off. I lay my head on the table already exhausted from the day that has only just begun 10 minutes earlier. As I push myself out of my seat, I catch something twinkling out of the corner of my eye. I open the blinds wider and stare in wonderment at the sign before my eyes. A beautiful rainbow gracing the skies. I smile and thank the Lord for the reminder. Because you see, the rainbow isn’t just a beautiful creation and it isn’t just a reminder of the covenant that God made with Noah not to flood the earth again. It is a reminder of who God is. When we look upon it and remember it, all the “stresses” of life should diminish as we are filled by the thoughts of God and His character:
God is INFINITE: He is UNCHANGEABLE. Malachi 3:6 says, ” For I am the Lord, I do not change…” and Rev. 1:8 says, “‘I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End,’ says the Lord, ‘who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.'” He is the same today as He was yesterday, the time of Noah, the time of Adam and Eve and at the time of Creation. He has always existed and will always exist! We never have to worry about Him leaving us or forsaking us because He will always BE!!!
God is OMNIPRESENT: He is OMNISCIENT. God is everywhere and knows everything. Jeremiah 23:24 says, “‘Can anyone hide himself in secret places, So I shall not see him?’ says the Lord; ‘Do I not fill the heaven and earth?’ says the Lord.” and 1 Kings 8:27 Solomon says, “But will God indeed dwell on the earth? Behold, heaven and the heaven of heavens cannot contain You. How much less this temple which I have built!”. There is no where on this earth that we can hide from God or that He will not see us and know us. There is no where that is big enough to contain who He is. 1 Chronicles 28:9 says, “…for the Lord searches all hearts and understands all the intent of the thoughts.” Even when we cannot find the words to express our grief or our trouble God knows. We don’t have to say it with words, for His understanding is already there.
This also leads us to the truth that we cannot be separated from God. Hebrews 13:5 says, “For He Himself has said, ‘I will never leave you nor forsake you.’ So we may boldly say; ‘The Lord is my helper; I will not fear. What can man do to me?'” We can be confident in knowing that when man leaves us God never will. He will always be by our sides!
God is OMNIPOTENT:ALL POWERFUL. Hebrews 1:3 says, “The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word.” and Jeremiah 32:17 exclaims, “Ah, Sovereign LORD, you have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and outstretched arm. Nothing is too hard for you.” Nothing is too hard for the Lord. Nothing! The same God who created this world and the people in it, is watching after you. Philippians 1:6 tells us, “Being confident of this, that He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”
If we know that God is all powerful, all knowing, ever present, infinite, unchangeable and full of love and compassion then we can trust Him. He has kept every promise He has ever made and we can be sure that He always will. So if this is true then we know that no matter where life finds us or what is in store for us that God is working, He understands, He is with us, He is capable. We can believe the truths represented and trust them! like in 2 Corinthians 4:7-18 which says,
“But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, so that the surpassing greatness of the power will be of God and not from ourselves; we are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not despairing; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying about in the body the dying of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our body. For we who live are constantly being delivered over to death for Jesus’ sake, so that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our mortal flesh. So death works in us, but life in you.
But having the same spirit of faith, according to what is written, “I BELIEVED, THEREFORE I SPOKE,” we also believe, therefore we also speak, knowing that He who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus and will present us with you. For all things are for your sakes, so that the grace which is spreading to more and more people may cause the giving of thanks to abound to the glory of God.
Therefore we do not lose heart, but though our outer man is decaying, yet our inner man is being renewed day by day. For momentary, light affliction is producing for us an eternal weight of glory far beyond all comparison, while we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen; for the things which are seen are temporal, but the things which are not seen are eternal.”
God is Faithful, enduring, full of love and grace. If He is for us – nothing and no one can be against us. We are in Christ. This world is failing and we see evidence of that everyday and that is when we thank God that this is not our eternal home, but a pitstop. So may we gird up and take on the day with boldness knowing these truths! And the next time you see a rainbow let it be a reminder of the great God we serve!
